Internal Linking Strategy: My 2026 SEO and GEO Playbook

Internal linking is the fastest SEO lever most sites already control.
I do not say that because internal links are glamorous. They are not. I say it because when I audit a site with 20 to 200 pages, the same pattern appears again and again: the owner keeps publishing, but the pages that should rank are buried, orphaned, or linked with anchors that say nothing.
My internal linking strategy is simple: route authority from pages Google already trusts to pages the business needs to grow.
The short version
Internal links do three jobs:

That is the foundation. The operator work is deciding which links to add first.

What competitors do well
The internal linking SERP is dominated by pages from brands like Yoast, Semrush, Backlinko, Search Engine Land, and technical SEO shops. The winning pattern is clear:
- They define internal links quickly.
- They explain crawl discovery and authority flow.
- They cover orphan pages.
- They include anchor text rules.
- They show pillar-cluster thinking.
- They turn the topic into a repeatable audit workflow.
Yoast frames internal linking as a way to pass strength from high-authority or popular posts to newer or less visible pages. Semrush emphasizes orphan pages and site structure. Backlinko breaks the basics down cleanly for beginners.

My internal link audit
I start with four exports:
- GSC pages with impressions.
- A crawl with internal link counts and depth.
- Sitemap URLs.
- Blog/category inventory.
Then I tag each page:

| Indexed but no impressions | Link from the closest hub or reconsider intent |
| Orphan page | Add contextual links or noindex if not useful |

| Pillar page | Link from every relevant spoke |
This is where internal linking becomes strategy instead of decoration.
The donor and acceptor model
I call source pages "donors" and target pages "acceptors."
A good donor page has:
- Existing impressions or clicks
- Topical relevance
- Crawlable links
- Enough body content for contextual anchors
- A reason for the reader to continue
A good acceptor page has:
- Business value
- Ranking potential
- Clear intent
- Enough content quality to deserve the link
Do not send every link to the homepage. That is lazy routing. Send links to the page that best answers the next question.
Anchor text rules I actually use
I avoid exact-match spam, but I also avoid useless anchors.

I vary anchors naturally:

The point is clarity, not repetition.
Pillar-cluster linking
For SERP Strategists, I want the content cluster to behave like a map.
Example:

Every supporting page should link back to the closest pillar. Pillars should link out to the most useful spokes. Related spokes should link sideways only when the reader genuinely benefits.
Low-hanging GSC workflow
When I want quick movement, I do this:
- Export pages ranking in positions 10-30.
- Pick five URLs with business relevance.
- Find three donor pages for each.
- Add descriptive contextual links.
- Update related sections if the link feels forced.
- Recheck GSC after recrawl.
This often works faster than writing a new article because Google already knows the target page exists.
The link placement test
I do not add a link unless it passes three tests:

| Business fit | Does the target page support authority, conversion, or recovery? |
If a link only passes the SEO test but fails the reader test, I usually skip it. Forced links weaken the page and make the article feel engineered instead of helpful.
A simple anchor distribution model
For an important page, I want anchor variety:

This gives Google enough clarity without making the site look mechanically optimized.
What not to do
Do not add sitewide footer links to every blog post and call it strategy.
Avoid:
- Too many links in one paragraph
- Same anchor repeated everywhere
- Links that interrupt the reader
- Linking only to recent posts
- Linking to weak pages just because they exist
- Navigation bloat
Internal links are recommendations. If every page recommends every other page, the signal becomes weak.
Internal linking for GEO
Internal links also help AI systems understand entity relationships.
If a page about "zero-click search" links to "AI Overviews," "GEO," and "AI search visibility," the site is building a semantic graph. That graph helps both crawlers and readers understand how concepts fit together.
That is why I think about internal links as:
- Crawl paths
- Authority paths
- Reader paths
- Entity paths
SEO and GEO both benefit when those paths are clean.
My weekly link maintenance routine
Every week, I would check:

This takes less time than writing a new post and often has more immediate impact.
The final rule
Internal linking is not about adding more links. It is about making the site explain itself.
If Google, AI systems, and readers can all follow the same path from question to answer to next action, the site becomes easier to rank and easier to convert.
